Inspired by a Canadian-Panamanian couple I met hiking in New Zealand in 2017, who shared their itinerary with me by email.
---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Jorge Delrio Date: Sun, 26 Feb 2017 at 11:16 Subject: Everest To: tim@emmaeins.io <tim@emmaeins.io> NOTES ON EVEREST - apply for Nepal visa online before you travel; 30 day visa is sufficient - you need 2 permits to trek to Everest: TIMS and Sagamarta (Everest) National Park. You can get these once you are on the trek (TIMS just before Monju, and Park permit just after Monju) - the day you arrive in Kathmandu go the jeep/bus stop/station and buy your ticket for Salleri (leaves the next morning at 5:30am) - Trek starts in Salleri through the following towns (all mapped out in maps.me): Salleri, Nunthala, Caricola, Chaurikowka, Monju, Namche Bazaar - Namche Bazaar is the place to stock up on trail snacks. Spend 2 nites here for altitude aclimatization. Do a day hike - Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche. Spend 2 nites in Dingboche, do a day hike to Chukung-Ri - then Lobuche. Spend 2-3 nights here and do day hike to KalaPatar or EBC. KalaPatar is more spectacular - from Lobuche we trekked towards Gokyo across the Chola Pass as follows: Lebuche to Zunglag, to Thangnak, to Gokyo. - Zunglag to Thangnak goes over the Chola Pass, its a 8-9 hour hike, SPECTACULAR !! - In Gokyo, do a day hike to Gokyo-Ri (do the sunset walk !!!) - from Gokyo we headed back as follows: Gokyo, Dole, Namche Bazaar - from Namche Bazar you can hike back to Salleri to take the jeep/bus to Kathmandu, or hike to Lukla to fly back - average daily hikes were 5-6 hours includings rests - worst enemies during the trek are: altitude sickness if you go too fast (buy a few Diamox pills just in case); food poisoning/gastroenteritis (go 100% vegetarian after Namche Bazaar, use water purification tablets, bring hand sanitizer) - about 23 days in total starting and ending in Salleri; 19 days in total starting in Salleri and ending in Lukla (for the flight to Kathmandu). The itinerary can easily be completed 1-2-3 days faster - enjoy the wonderful food in Kathmandu upon your return !!
